The seed for our friends to work together as DJs began with a house party on New Year's Eve 2008. We decided to bring in our friends as DJs because we knew they had great, eclectic tastes in music. A few months later, June 2009, Hella Gay officially began as a birthday party for our resident DJ GSTAR and was organized by GSTAR , DJ HEY HEY HEY, and the other early Hella Gay contributors. The first party was so much fun, we have done it every month ever since!
At the time we started Hella Gay we were all going to dance parties in SF. As soon as we started we had people crossing over this way. we wanted a party where we could get down to the newest beats and great mixes, we wanted to play stuff that we liked, new genres that sometimes freak people out. to push the boundaries. so much has changed since we started. It's just amazing the artistic creative explosion that we are sharing as amateurs; it's all for the love of the art and not for the love of money. The vibe, the energy is super important so i think that the love that we have for our art spills over. none of us were DJs when we started. Look at us know. we've got the best party for music lovers in the Bay Area!
We are all about the music and the joy of holding open a space where queer people and those who love us can dance, sweat, make connections, be silly or sexy, and have a blast. Also, we are obsessed with new music, it takes a ton of work to incorporate new music into your set every time, but it pays off when people come up to you afterwards asking "Damn- where'd you find this?"
